What are intercalated disks and what is their function for the cardiac muscles?

Intercalated disks are responsible for the propagation of the electrical impulses throughout the heart. Long story short after the Sinus Atrial node fires electrical impulses travel down the heart. These disks just make a smooth wave like motion for the contraction.
