What does syntax mean?

Okay I am doing a report, poem thing for my AP language arts cl and well I don't really know a lot yet but I really want to learn. My teacher says she wants us to write this paper and use different stuff including syntax. What is it? and not a definition either I need to hear it in someones words if you know what I mean. And could you give a simple example? thank you! :)
