Shingles question.... How long do they last and and what helps to alleviate the condition? TY?

I am concerned for my mom who is 75 yrs old. They are on the right side of her neck and up not quite into ear. I am hoping someone will be able to help. The doc does not want to prescribe any med... why i dont know.
